 MELLON RESEARCH FELLOWSHPS CONDITIONS GOVERNING GRANTS FROM THE AMERICAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE IN SPAIN Mellon Fellowships for Research in Spain by Central and Eastern European Scholars are largely supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Awards are made subject to the following conditions: 1. Grants are made only for research to be carried out in Spain and to defray costs of transportation to and from Spain. The awarding of a fellowship does not imply a contractual agreement between the recipient and INSTITUTO DE LENGUAS Y CULTURAS DEL MEDITERRÁNEO Y ORIENTE PRÓXIMO integrated in the Centre of Human and Social Sciences (CCHS) other than the dispersal of funds to conduct the work specified in the proposal. 2. Within 30 days after the termination of the research period, grantees are required to submit 1) a narrative report summarizing the research accomplished and 2) a brief financial report summarizing the way in which funds were expended. Fellows who do not provide these reports will not be eligible for future grants from the Institute. The INSTITUTO DE LENGUAS Y CULTURAS DEL MEDITERRÁNEO Y ORIENTE PRÓXIMO (CSIC) would appreciate a note permitting publication of the narrative report (or and edited version thereof) in the INSTITUTO DE LENGUAS Y CULTURAS DEL MEDITERRÁNEO Y ORIENTE PRÓXIMO (CSIC) Annual Report. 3. Grant monies may not be used concurrently with other grants or awards made for the same purpose. 4. Fellows are expected to submit two copies of any publication resulting from INSTITUTO DE LENGUAS Y CULTURAS DEL MEDITERRÁNEO Y ORIENTE PRÓXIMO (CSIC) sponsored research for deposit in the branch libraries in Spain. Any such publication should acknowledge the support of INSTITUTO DE LENGUAS Y CULTURAS DEL MEDITERRÁNEO Y ORIENTE PRÓXIMO (CSIC) and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. 5. Before the release of fellowship funds, recipients must show proof of coverage for health and medical evacuation insurance during the period of their tenure as an INSTITUTO DE LENGUAS Y CULTURAS DEL MEDITERRÁNEO Y ORIENTE PRÓXIMO (CSIC) – Mellon Fellow in Spain. Mª Teresa Ortega Monasterio Directora ILC MELLON RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS FOR CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN SCHOLARS IN SPAIN 2011 Fellowship Program: The Institute of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures (ILC) of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) is pleased to invite applications for Mellon Research Fellowships in Spain for 2011. The ILC is offering two fellowships to Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Slovak, Bulgarian and Romanian scholars holding the PhD or its equivalent, who are engaged in advanced research in any field of the classical or Semitic philology involving any of the items developed in the departments of the Institute. The fellowships are for three months and the research must be carried out in Madrid, in the ILC (CSIC). Institute: The ILC is integrated in the Centre of Human and Social Sciences (CCHS) and consists of four research lines covering the following fields: Classical Philology, Arab Studies, Bible and Near Eastern Studies and Jewish and Sephardic Studies. On the website http://www.filol.csic.esyou can find all the information about the institute. It also will provide general assistance and access to the library. Purpose and Eligibility:Funds for the fellowship have been provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to the Council of American Overseas Research Centres to administer for the purpose of bringing East-Central European scholars of the humanities into a broader research community. Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Slovak, Bulgarian, Romanian, Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian scholars who are permanent residents of one of the included countries are eligible to apply. Applicants may not have held a prior fellowship under this program. Preference will be given to scholars in the early stages of their careers. Fellows are expected to devote full time to their projects and to participate in the activities of the Institute. Permission: Mellon fellows are personally responsible for obtaining their permission prior to entering the country. It may be obtained through the Spanish Embassy or Consulate. Stipend:The program offers a stipend up to $ 15,000 to cover the costs of the scholar’s research project, including travel, housing and work related expenses. Application (see attached application format): Application should consist of 1) a brief project statement (3-5 pages) outlining the project and its significance; 2) a current curriculum vitae; and 3) two letters of reference from scholars in the relevant field including comment on the value and viability of the project (may be sent separately).
